I am Percy Guzman, a Costa Rican author and researcher currently based in the United States, where I have been working at the National Cancer Institute since 2021. Originally trained as a scientist, I discovered my passion for storytelling through my professional work and a series of writing courses. What began as a pursuit of facts and data slowly transformed into something more profound—a deep desire to bring history to life through narrative.
My debut historical novel, The Scent of a Bullet, explores the Costa Rican Civil War and its central figures, including President José "Don Pepe" Figueres. Through extensive research and storytelling, I sought to illuminate a chapter of history often overlooked, capturing not just the events of war but the emotions, struggles, and sacrifices of those who fought for a new future.
I have recently completed Forgotten Heroes, the sequel to The Scent of a Bullet, a novel that became more than just a continuation—it turned into a tribute. In it, I bring to light the unsung individuals who stood beside Don Pepe, those whose names were lost to time but whose bravery helped shape the destiny of Costa Rica. Writing this book was an emotional journey, one that forced me to confront the fragility of memory, the weight of history, and the responsibility of storytelling.
Writing has become more than a passion—it is now a mission. Through meticulous research and an ever-growing love for historical narratives, I am committed to preserving the voices of the past, ensuring that their stories are not forgotten. Forgotten Heroes is only the beginning of this journey, and I look forward to continuing to explore, write, and bring to life the untold histories that deserve to be remembered.
